Selling your boat? Think like a buyer, not a seller.

Updated: Sep 7, 2022

United City Yachts is Canada's Yacht Sales Network and has years of experience and know-how in the boat and yacht sales industry. If you have any questions, please reach out to one of our brokers by visiting www.unitedcityyachts.com.

This simple piece of advice can be utilized for any situation when you are selling something and we hope you find value in this article.

Have you ever shopped for something pre-owned online and become frustrated with either the lack of price, lack of detail or poor photos? That is because the person selling the item was not thinking like a buyer.

Presentation is key. Buyers want to see pictures, read details and have a clear price. Combined, these create value - and value is what will help you sell your boat. It is very common for a buyer to do their research and know a lot about the boat. A smart buyer comes prepared. We want to help you build a great listing to help you sell your boat!

This is something we work hard on at United City Yachts. We consider the buyer experience, and how to create value. We provide a custom description, information from the manufacturer, great photos and great videos of each listing. We provide price recommendations based on our research and analyze the market to find potential buyers. Basically, everything a buyer typically does during the 'buying process, we lay out on a silver platter!

When it comes to showing a boat for sale, it is important to work around the buyer's schedule. This is a big reason to use United City Yachts. Your yacht broker is dedicated to selling your boat, they will schedule a viewing around the buyer's schedule, so you don't need to.

Basically, everything a buyer requires during the 'buying process', we lay out on a silver platter!

The goal is to make buying a boat easy (or anything you want to sell for that matter).

So far we've covered how to list something for sale by providing details, and being open to a buyer's schedule to help you sell! What's next? The offer, Sea Trials, Surveys, documentation and transfer of funds.

The fact is, buying a boat is a big transaction - there is a lot on the line for both the buyer and seller. It is imperative to build trust with one another and to find a safe and secure way to transfer funds when a deal is completed.

Kind of like real estate, at United City Yachts, we take care of all of these details, so you don't have to. We will show your boat, handle offers, and all of the closing details including scheduling surveys, water tests, transfers of funds and delivery. We have processes in place to make sure both the buyer and seller have set expectations and a good experience - and at the end of it all, you walk away with your money, and the buyer loves their new boat!

If you are confident with everything above, we still recommend speaking with one of our brokers. We will provide you with a market report for your boat, and market pricing, and explain the value that using a professional yacht broker will bring you while selling your boat.
